LYMINGTON
the furniture depository
This former furniture depository known as the Langham Browne building situated in the centre of Lymington was constructed around the turn of the century believed to be 1907 and was used for commercial and storage purposes.
For the past 10 years prior it had be largely disused and was falling into a state of dilapidation and disrepair. It was predominately a three-storey building with flat roofs and pebble dashed elevations.
The building was particularly unattractive and completely out of scale and character with it’s neighbours as well as the town’s street scenes as a whole, but is a local landmark and of local heritage interest.
Dwell Project converted this building into 5 residential apartments, including, a new third floor contemporary penthouse, creating a fourth storey, breathing new life and purpose into the building. The ground floor was converted into garaging giving off street parking for the apartments, cycle storage and a refuse area. A separate ground floor commercial office was also formed. A number of external fenestration alterations were added including Juliet balconies and the removal of the pebbledash and replacement with limestone render and new elements wrapped in Zinc.
This was a highly sustainable regeneration development with many of the original materials having been recycled and reused, resulting in a modern reclaimed aesthetic and a reduction of construction waste, and a low environmental impact.
The penthouse was constructed from Structural Insulated Panels and solar panels were installed on the roof and the heating is provided by a low carbon footprint air source heat pump.
Original floorboards were lifted and reused throughout the apartments and as treads on newly fabricated staircase. Exposed brickwork was cleaned and left exposed giving a nod to the buildings industrial roots.
